Parent Conversations:  Talking To Your Child About Being Gifted

Please welcome CGCC Board Member, Pam Shaw, and CGCC Parent Member Fran Khawaja as your Facilitators for February 7, while Katherine Peterson is out of town.

Gifted and twice-exceptional (2E) children know they're different.  How then does a parent discuss those differences for healthy self concept and connection to their peers?   In a world where being different is a subject of note, how might we help our children navigate their unusual intelligence without implying elitism?   How can we help them find like-thinking friends and companions?  How can this characteristic be reframed for better self understanding?   Following are some resources to inform and inspire conversation:

"Should we tell them they're gifted?  Should we tell them how gifted?" Hoagies Gifted  https://www.hoagiesgifted.org/how_gifted.htm

"Your Kids Are Gifted.  Should You Tell them?" Rainforest Mind  https://rainforestmind.com/2016/01/15/how-to-tell-kids-about-being-gifted/

"Talking With Your Child About Giftedness" National Association for Gifted Children  https://cdn.ymaws.com/nagc.org/resource/collection/77F0AE22-8EEA-4FAE-A9FB-908FC648A382/NAGC-TIP_Sheet-Talking_with_Your_Child_About_G.pdf

We aspire to welcome everyone and address gifted topics that are accessible and relevant to busy parents.  Join us to listen, participate, collect resources, share ideas and create community that supports and understands gifted parenting. Topic suggestions welcome and will change each session, and resources will be provided to inform and fuel the conversation.  It's OK if you don't have time to read, just join us for inspiring conversation with other gifted parents and Katherine Peterson, parent,  CGCC Board Member / Facilitator.   Other CGCC Board Members including Carole Jones, CGCC President, and Aileen Kelleher, LCSW, CGCC Board Member and Professional Member and Professional Member, and Esther Tarkieltaub, Professional Member will join as they are able. Please feel free to reach out to Katherine Peterson, CGCC Board Member & Parent Discussion Facilitator with questions or ideas.   We will cap the group at 10 participants, so please be sure to sign up to save your place, and cancel if you're unable to attend.

Please note:  Due to the popularity of this program there will be a $5 charge for non-members attending this event.  Considering joining as a member for a $25 annual fee and attend all member events for FREE.
