A Community of Gardeners (Film Screening and Q&A Discussion)

The District of Columbia has a vibrant network of Community Gardens where people, plants, pollinators, and other wildlife intermingle. Join us for a discussion on the importance of community gardens and the roles they play in our neighborhoods. Filmmaker, Cintia Cabib, will discuss her film, A Community of Gardeners, giving her perspective on what gardening can do for an urban community. Gary Krupnick, from the Smithsonian’s Plant Conservation Unit, will talk about a new pollinator project for community gardeners in DC. Carrie Seltzer from iNaturalist will tell us all how gardeners can participate in the 2021 City Nature Challenge DC.

Those who register for the program will be sent a link to view the film, A Community of Gardeners, in advance of the program.

This program will be presented as a Zoom video webinar. A link will be emailed to all registrants.

About the Film

A Community of Gardeners explores the vital role of seven Washington, D.C. community gardens as sources of fresh, nutritious food, outdoor classrooms, places of healing, links to immigrants’ native countries, centers of social interaction, and oases of beauty and calm in inner-city neighborhoods. The film also looks back on the history of community gardens in the United States, from the potato patch farms of the late 19th century, to the victory gardens of World War II, to community gardening’s current renaissance.
