The simplest definition of anthropology is "the scientific study of humanity". This scientific study involves the investigation of human societies and cultures and their development. Does home mean the same thing in the United States versus a remote island in the Pacific? Does community mean the same thing for somebody in New Zealand versus somebody in Ghana? What does it mean to be wealthy, here in the US, versus being wealthy in a remote community in the Brazilian rainforest? Anthropology tells us that there are thousands of other ways to think of everything, of homes, cities, schools, societies, economies, and cosmologies. In this workshop style class, we will examine some examples coming from a wide spectrum of different cultures, of concepts like nation, city, wealth, artist and more. We will imagine our own definitions of the same concepts and create a co-authored blueprint of what we would like the future to be. The workshop is designed to facilitate communication, to create an environment where kids can work together and collaborate on a collective project. There will be drawing, painting, writing, design, engineering, math, and, I hope, music, too.
