For students interested in competitive debate.

We will begin by learning the fundamentals of debate (all the way back to the greek: ethos, pathos, logos), followed by the learning structure of a modern policy debate round, and then to practice debates.

Emphasis will be placed on research, argumentation, and presentation.

We will use the National Speech and Debate Association policy topics, found at https://www.speechanddebate.org/topics/

Debates will be conducted in teams of two. If there is interest, the debaters could register for a local tournament and compete in the novice division (these usually take place on weekends).

Ages: 13+ (exceptions considered)

Size: 2-6 students (For the first offering. If we repeat, I will determine if we can accommodate more).
Price: Free, families pay entry fees & travel expenses (if any) for any tournaments we enter

About the instructor:

Michael Kloster participated in competitive debate for 10 years (1990-2000), completing his career ranked 5th nationally in the NDT. He was the assistant coach of debate for the St. Marks School of Texas (2001-2004) where his team placed 2nd in the national finals and won many national tournaments.
