We often think of math as being an esoteric subject, but it is actually all around us. Join Sarah as she explores real world math problems, with everything from college loans to collapsing bridges! It will astound old and young alike just how much math appears in the real world - and how mathematical illiteracy can be used to manipulate the unsuspecting populace!

In this class we will explore math mistakes in the media, how statistics can be manipulated to make the true seem false and the false seem true, the birthday paradox, payday loans, the dangerous consequences of misplaced decimal points, how statistics stopped an epidemic, and much more. You will never look at math - or the world - the same again!

(This class does not have homework.)

Minimum/maximum number of students: 5/10

Age range: 9+

Price: $21

Supplies required: Basic calculator, pencils and paper

Teacher: Sarah Alexander

Sarah Alexander is a certified (certifiable?) math nerd who plays with equations for fun. She sees math everywhere in the world (and places beyond), and loves to show people how cool math can be.

Family must register for LOGYC Coop in order to sign up for classes.
