LOGYC Fall 2018 - Classic Books and Writing (10+)

The course will guide students in the close reading and critical analysis of classic works of literature, and help them appreciate the texts and the contexts in which the works were written. Composition, literary analysis as well as exercises in informal logic will all be major components of the class. We will use guided writing, group collaboration and Socratic Seminar to accomplish these goals. We will also write, edit and peer edit (with assistance) one final paper. There will be weekly homework consisting of independent reading and writing assignments that must be completed in order to fully participate in this course.


Minimum Requirements:

        Ability to engage in mature discussions (handle mature subject matter) and contribute thoughtfully in a group setting.

        Must be a strong reader, able to read independently several novels over the course of the session.


Materials: Composition notebook, writing materials and book selections.


Book List ( We may or may not get through all of these but the selections will all come from this list):                                  

        Charles Dickens- A Tale of Two Cities

        George Orwell- 1984

        George Orwell- Animal Farm

        John Steinbeck- Of Mice and Men

        William Golding- Lord of the Flies

Noel has a B. A. in English Literature and has been homeschooling her children for 6 years. She has a passion for the written word and exploring new ideas.
