This SENGinar presents a culturally and equity-grounded holistic approach for gifted and general education stakeholders passionate about equity and improving gifted education identification and services. It aims to desegregate gifted education and advanced learner programs in order to fully support and advocate for students of color.


The authors include: Donna Ford, Ph.D., Ken Dickson, M. Ed, Michelle Frazier Trotman Scott, Ph.D., and Tarek Grantham, Ph.D.

About the Presenters


Ken Dickson, M.Ed. has served in K-12 exceptional needs administrative capacities for over 35 years, as well as in numerous national leadership capacities with educational advocacy groups that support children with exceptional needs. His areas of investigation include:


  • underrepresented learners in gifted education,
  • overrepresented learners in special education,
  • cultural diversity/advanced academics relationships,
  • policy and practice,
  • social and emotional needs of learners, and
  • professional learning and parent advocacy.


Ken is currently expanding an advocacy network on professional learning, education policy and practice, as related to educational equity, cultural and academic diversity.


Donna Y. Ford, Ph.D., is Professor of Education and Human Development and Cornelius Vanderbilt Endowed Chair at Vanderbilt University. Professor Ford conducts research primarily in gifted and multicultural/urban education. She consults with school districts, educational and legal organizations on gifted education under-representation and Advanced Placement, multicultural/urban education and counseling, and closing the achievement gap.
