High-Risk Behavior: Insights into the Teenage Brain

ADRIANA GALVAN

Wolcott School

524 W Wolcott Ave

Chicago, IL

During adolescence, the brain is primed to explore the world, seek out new friendships and romantic partners, and pursue independence from caregivers.

Exactly how and why does this happen?

Dr. Galván will share her research on the adolescent brain and describe the neurodevelopmental changes that, when coupled with raging hormones, produce the emotional, passionate, and inspiring individuals who characterize the teenage years. She will also discuss how her research has informed public policy in the domains of teenage driving, teenage sleep, and juvenile justice.

Dr. Adriana Galván is an Associate Professor of Psychology at UCLA whose expertise is in adolescent brain development. She received her B.A. from Barnard College, Columbia University and her PhD in Neuroscience from Cornell. She is the Director of the Developmental Neuroscience Laboratory. Her research is funded by the National Institute of Health (NIH), National Science Foundation, MacArthur Foundation, Jacobs Foundation, and the William T. Grant Foundation.  She is the recipient of the APA Boyd McCandless Early Career Award, the William T. Grant Scholars Award, a Network Scholar of the MacArthur Foundation Research on Law and Neuroscience, the 2015 Distinguished Teaching Award from the UCLA Psychology Department, the 2016 APA Distinguished Scientific Award for Early Career Contributions, and the 2016 Cognitive Neuroscience Society Young Investigator Award.
