Meeting the Academic & Social-Emotional Needs of Gifted Hispanic/Latino & ELL Students

by Jamie Castellano

In this webinar participants will be presented with information on the practices that promote the academic, cognitive, and social-emotional growth and development of gifted Hispanic/Latino and ELL students. The vast majority of these students qualify for the federal school-based lunch program, attend Title I schools, and live in communities with limited resources. Program consideration and reform efforts for these students should consider many options. Components that should be given special emphasis, particularly at the school level, include maintaining ethnic identity, accommodating learning style differences, the availability of counseling services, parent support groups, an accelerated and enriched curriculum, and preparation to become college and career ready. The diversity of Hispanic/Latino students, for example, is so great that we must further challenge ourselves to develop new possibilities in how we reach out to them. For example, instructional strategies that will be promoted include bibliotherapy, cinematherapy, and songs of hope, inspiration, and efficacy. Information will also be presented on how to create and support an inclusively, culturally rich classroom environment that meaningfully respects and honors the diversity of gifted Hispanic/Latino and ELL students. All of these practices, processes, and procedures promote their academic, social and emotional growth and development. At the same time, the process must be localized, contextualized, and flexible enough so that the validation of their complex diversity can take place.
