Lecture: The World's Fairs of Paris and Chicago

  • March 08, 2017
  • 6:00 PM
  • Driehaus Museum, Chicago

Museum Members: $8, Public: $15   Buy tickets

Two of the most important World’s Fairs took place in Paris in 1889 and 1900 – the Expositions Universelles. Showcasing French achievements in the arts and sciences as well as highlighting the tourist allures of the city, millions of visitors reveled at the French capital. Inspired by Paris’s success, Chicago launched its own Columbian Exposition in 1893. Each fair introduced technological marvels, exotic displays, and artistic novelties that left visitors in awe.

Exuberant posters ingeniously promoted and commemorated each exposition—happy stamping grounds for artists, photographers, and journalists.  Supported by the rich visual record, this lecture will explore the fairs, both as physical settings and social experiences, as well as the special relationship linking Paris and Chicago.

Neil Harris is Preston and Sterling Morton Professor Emeritus of History and Art History at the University of Chicago.  His books and articles have, over the years, addressed the history of art, entertainment, urban life, and cultural institutions.  His Chicago books include The Chicagoan: A Forgotten Magazine of the Jazz Age and Chicago Apartments.  A Century of Lakefront Luxury.  He is currently absorbed by French book arts in the 20th century, and in 2014 with his wife, Teri J. Edelstein, curated and co-authored an exhibition and book entitled En Guerre!  French Illustrators and World War I.

Ticket Refund Policy:  Tickets are fully refundable up to 72 hours prior to the event.
