Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Commemorate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Enjoy a production of The MLK Project: The Fight for Civil Rights by Writers Theatre and a musical performance by the Chicago Chamber Choir, along with storytelling and crafts for kids that reflect Dr. King’s messages of peace and justice.


Museum admission is FREE for Illinois residents on Commemorative Days! Special family-friendly activities and performances are designed to honor and celebrate significant moments and figures in history. No reservations needed; we look forward to seeing you.

Produced by Writers Theatre
45-minute performance followed by postshow discussion
Recommended for grades 6 and up. Includes sensitive content.


12:30 p.m.
Precious Lord: A Tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
45-minute performance by the Chicago Chamber Choir
Recommended for grades 3 and up


1:45 p.m.
“I Have a Dream” speech by Martin Luther King Jr.

Reenactment by Oba William King
Q&A to follow


2:45 p.m.
Community Conversation
45-minute interactive discussion facilitated by storyteller Oba William King.

3:30 and 4:00 p.m.
The Great Chicago Adventure
Feel the intensity of the Great Chicago Fire, relive the splendor of the World’s Columbian Exposition, and more on a cinematic journey through Chicago history. Running time: 25 minutes.
Recommended for grades 3 and up


Please note: Our signature film The Great Chicago Adventure will run on an adjusted schedule due to special programming for this day. Thank you for understanding!
