Family Day

A Day at the Beach

Celebrate summer living in the city with the Smart and Families Read, an initiative of WYCC Public Television.

Together, we’ll read Tar Beach, the Caldecott Award winning book by Faith Ringgold, and make our own quilt paintings, colorful painted beach towels, and picnic blankets.

Drop by and join in the Smart's free family activities every month! Each Family Day features hands-on art activities designed to inspire children to think about and respond creatively to art and the world around them.

The Smart and Families Read (an initiative of WYCC PBS Chicago) join forces in this all-ages family day celebrating living in the city in the summer, going to the beach, reading together, and making art. Together, we’ll read 'Tar Beach', the Caldecott Award winning book by Faith Ringgold Books, and make our own quilt paintings, colorful painted beach towels, and picnic blankets!

Free. All materials provided. Activities best for kids ages 4–12, accompanied by an adult.
