Frances Macbeth Glessner, The Fortnightly, and Music in Gilded Age Chicago

  • Frances Macbeth Glessner was a passionate, lifelong devotee of music. She was a talented pianist, a generous patroness, a serious concert attendee, and a friend to an astonishing variety of musicians and musical stars of her time. This lecture offers a glimpse of her life in music during the years of 1889-1893 - culminating in her presentation of a paper on Mozart for The Fortnightly - and of the energetic cultural life of Chicago’s Gilded Age. Melanie Kronick Bookout is an Associate Professor of Music at Indiana University Purdue University Fort Wayne, where she teaches music history. She is an active performer of early music. Image by James Caufield.
