Lecture: Scanning the Pharaohs

  • November 29, 2015
  • 2:00 PM - 3:00 PM
  • The Oriental Institute, The University of Chicago
The groundbreaking imaging findings of the royal mummies of the New Kingdom of Ancient Egypt at the Egyptian Museum in Cairo is presented by the scholar who was personally involved in the research. Tutankhamun, Amenhotep III, Tiye, Ramesses II, Ramesses III, and many more were among the examined royal mummies.

The lecture reviews the current state of our knowledge about the life, death, and mummification of these great Pharaohs and queens of the New Kingdom. Intriguing theories about the death of the famous pharaohs derived from scientific clues, new evidence regarding the technology of mummification, the jewelry and amulets beneath the surviving wrappings and inside the bodies of the mummies will be explored and more.

Sahar Saleem is a professor of Radiology at Faculty of Medicine-Cairo University, expert in paleoradiology, and author of the new book Scanning the Pharaohs (published by the American University Press in Cairo), as well as several articles on Ancient Egyptian mummies.
