Say It Loud: The Music Behind the Movement – Celebrating African-American Music

Saturday, June 20, 1-5pm
Logan Center Courtyard

In conjunction with Logan Center Family Saturday programming and the exhibition opening of We Are What We See: The Contemporary Realism of Gerald Sanders and His Students, Africa International House (producers of the African Festival of the Arts) and the Logan Center invite you to an intergenerational celebration of African-American Music Appreciation Month.

African-American Music Appreciation Month is a celebration of the long and proud legacy of the many African-American musicians whose songs and music have touched the heart and soul of people around the world and transcend genre. It began in June of 1979 as Black Music Month by decree of President Jimmy.

This all-ages celebration honors the African-American artists whose music over the centuries has brought us comfort and joy and lifted our spirits in times of struggle. This dynamic program will feature:

•Traditional African drumming
•A sing-along of freedom songs featuring singer-songwriter and storyteller Zahra Baker
•Greater House of Prayer "GHOP" Choir
•The big band music of Soundmine Merchants
•Maggie Brown performing her Legacy Music Project
•Chicago-born poet, activist and "humanitarian rap artist" FM SUPREME who uses language as a tool for positive change.

Tickets are free!

After the event, guests are invited to attend a film screening at AIH or to stay at the Logan Center for The New Speak Open Mic featuring Team Englewood, avery r. young, and teen poets and spoken word artists.
