Character Creativity Workshop

Participants will engage in a series of exercises designed to generate honest ideas for new characters and the world in which they live.

In addition to building well-rounded characters based on personal experience, you'll also learn introductory drawing skill basics that will inform visual realizations of the characters. At the end of the workshop, you'll come away with ideas to make the next move–story development!

Aspects of character development we'll explore:

• What emotionally motivates the character?
• Where does the character live? What does the character's environment look like?
• What obstacles prevent your characters from achieving what they want?
• What is his/her backstory?
• How can your personal experience be used to help build your character's identity and needs?

Steven Fischer

Steven Fischer is a two-time Emmy-nominated cartoonist, writer, producer, and digital cinematographer who has worked with the Maryland PBS affiliate, with TV Asia, and with the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts. In 2013, he was awarded a Fulbright from the US Department of State, Bureau of Education and Cultural Affairs, as a Specialist in creativity and storytelling. He has been a Facets Teaching Artist since 2012.
