People with unique different ways of thinking, successfully work together to produce many advances. Dr. Grandin will discuss how her extreme visual thinking helped her to understand animals. Another type of specialized mind are the mathematical pattern thinkers who created the many advances in physics. Students who have great abilities in either mathematics or art often have difficulties in school. They may get labelled autistic, attention deficit, or dyslexic. Einstein had no speech until age 3 and today, many school systems would have labeled him autistic. Dr. Grandin is worried that children who are talented in mathematics may flounder in today's education system.

Temple Grandin is a professor of animal science at Colorado State University. Her work on design of cattle handling facilities is used around the world. Half the cattle in North America are handled in a cattle track restrainer system she designed that is used in meat plants. An objective scoring system she developed for assessing animal welfare is used by McDonald's Corporation, and many other food companies. When Dr. Grandin was three, she had no speech and severe symptoms of autism. Early educational intervention and teachers and a mother who pushed her to develop her strength in art, helped her to be successful. Two of her books were New York Times bestsellers and Time Magazine designated her as one of the 100 Most Important People in 2010.
