A Free Celebration for All



Join us at the Art Institute to celebrate the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. with your family. Make a special memory, create a portrait of a hero, and discover new favorites at the museum. 



Free Family Art Making: Portraits of Heroes

Who is a hero to your family? At this free art–making activity, create a very special portrait with your family. No reservations necessary.


Free Art Institute Tours App

Download our free app, Art Institute Tours, and choose from 50 tours of the collection to enjoy with your family: from African American Artists and My Kind of Town to Kids in Art and Look a Little Closer. 


Free Admission

Admission is free for Illinois residents on Martin Luther King Jr. Day and every Free Winter Weekday (January 5–February 10). Plus, kids under 14 are always free—every day of the year. It’s the best museum deal in town!


Kid-Friendly Eats 

The Museum Café offers a host of healthy options for visitors of all ages, but our special Kids Menu is designed to cater to the distinctive tastes of our youngest visitors—with peanut butter and jelly, mac and cheese, pizza, and more!


Kid-Friendly Art

From arms and armor to the Thorne Miniature Rooms, from our interactive Puppets! exhibition to iconic works they’re sure to recognize, the museum is full of kid-friendly treasures waiting to be discovered.
