Psychiatric Medication and the Gifted: Power of a Trusting Partnership

  • April 07, 2026
  • online

Psychiatric medication can be very effective in controlling and managing symptoms of depression, anxiety, mood swings, and attentional problems. Yet, as practitioners of psychopharmacology emphasize, these medications do not affect the underlying causes of the symptoms. Getting to know gifted individuals with wonder and in a non-judgemental way, and without an exclusive focus on symptoms, is essential as it emphasizes that assessment and psychotherapy are a trusting partnership.

Establishing context is especially important when considering psychiatric medication and psychotherapy for gifted individuals: their atypical sensitivities and reactivities can be expressed in unconventional symptoms and behaviors. A case study will illustrate the different facets of these issues.
