Navigating School Accommodations for Gifted and 2e Students

May 21 at 12:00PM

This presentation will cover navigating school accommodations for twice-exceptional (2e) students, focusing on strategies for collaboration between families and educators. Led by Vanessa Aceves, a special education attorney, the discussion will explore the importance of accommodations for students with neurological and/or mental health conditions, the definition and application of Section 504 Plans and Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), and strategies for effective communication and advocacy. The presentation will also examine the types of accommodations available under these plans, such as academic, behavioral, environmental, and technological supports, and provide guidance on how to negotiate and secure these accommodations. The goal is to equip families with the knowledge and skills to work effectively with educators to secure supportive accommodations for their students.

Vanessa Aceves is a special education attorney at Equip for Equality. She is a 2023 Equal Justice Works Fellow sponsored by Aon and Kirkland & Ellis. Her fellowship projects focuses on securing in-school access to assistive technology for nonverbal students in Illinois. Equip for Equality is a disability rights organization for the state of Illinois. Equip for Equality’s mission is to advance the human and civil rights of children and adults with disabilities.
