Symbiosis in a Changing World: Lessons from Dying Corals

  • September 12, 2023
  • 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM
  • Field Museum, Chicago

The recent events of wildfires destroying Hawaiian cities, devastating floods in Europe, air quality alerts in Chicago due to Canadian wildfires, and unprecedented increases in global temperatures are clear indications of our planet's degrading climate. This decline is putting countless organisms at risk and pushing them to the brink of extinction. Coral reefs, for instance, are home to a quarter of all marine life, but rising ocean temperatures and uncontrolled coastline development threaten their survival. The effects of climate change are widespread and immediate attention is required to address this critical situation. To bring awareness to this issue, we are hosting a panel discussion titled "Symbiosis in a Changing World: Lessons from Dying Corals."

This public event is a part of the International Society of Endocytobiology's conference at the Field Museum. It aims to bring together experts to have an open and honest conversation about how symbiosis research, in its many forms, can help mitigate the negative outcomes of climate change. The discussion will primarily focus on corals - which depend on symbiotic algae for sustenance - but it will also cover other ecosystems, species, and crops that are threatened by climate change.
