The class will use Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley’s novel, Frankenstein, as a lens through which to probe the broader cultural ideas present in the early decades of the Nineteenth Century. The class with begin with an examination of Enlightenment ideals and through a close reading of Mary Shelley’s mother, Mary Wollstonecraft’s 1792 treatise, A Vindication of the Rights of Woman. As the class progresses, we will discuss the literary ideas of Romanticism through a study of Romantic poetry written by, Mary Shelley’s husband, Percy Bysshe Shelley and their mutual friend, Lord Byron.

It’s my hope that students will use this class as an example of how to investigate the rich cultural landscape in which art is created and how art itself informs, reflects and criticizes that landscape.

Frankenstein is available as a free public domain download on Planet Ebook.  Additional materials will be provided by the instructor.  Attendees will be expected to write a weekly one page exploration of the week’s reading and a 5 page paper at the end of term.
