What Parents Should Know About Social and Emotional Needs of Gifted Learners

Being a parent is challenging even in the best of times. When your child is academically advanced or identified as gifted, this brings some additional considerations, knowledge of which can help you become a more effective parent. In this session, Dr. Michael Matthews of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte will discuss some of the issues that parents of academically advanced learners may face at different points in their child's development. In addition to underachievement, perfectionism, and growing up as a gifted child in today’s environment, parents will learn more about how to help their child cope with some commonly encountered sources of stress in their lives.
