History Speaks: The History of the Chicago Stockyards

  • September 16, 2018
  • 4:00 PM - 5:00 PM
  • Naper Settlement, Naperville

Join author Richard Lindberg for a presentation on the history of the famed Chicago stockyards; the birth of an industry in the 1830s; and the opening of the “Yards” in 1865 until the final bell sounded in 1971. It was a city within a city – truly the “Hog Butcher to the World” and a sprawling colorful saga. Lindberg’s presentation also covers Upton Sinclair’s The Jungle and its impact on bringing much needed reform to the yards, improvements to sanitary conditions, and the tale of “Bubbly Creek,” the polluted waterway that has never fully recovered from the environmental damage of a hundred years ago.
