Kids Climate Summit: Focus on the Community

For the second year of the Illinois Kids Climate Summit we will be asking our kids to focus on climate and the community with an eye to being action-oriented.  The Summit asks kids in 3rd through 8th grades to engage with climate issues and then present their conclusions, suggestions and recommendations to one another and the rest of Illinois in the form of a video or a podcast. The Kids Climate Summit is scheduled to take place in April, and given our current circumstances will have a significant online component hopefully followed by an in-person component at the Illinois Math and Science Academy campus in Aurora.

In addition to the Summit, there are additional opportunities this fall for our community to engage with climate issues:

  • Climate Change Writing Challenge – An opportunity for kids to write those running for office to let them know of climate concerns. We have a writing coach who will happily critic your letters. All letters should be sent to the candidates in your area and also submitted to the Kids Climate Summit to be posted online.
  • Kids Climate Summit Art Challenge – Every good summit needs a strong representative image. Last year’s (at left) was submitted by students at the Science and Arts Academy.  Once again this year we invite students to submit an image. All images submitted will be posted online and the chosen image will be used on all Kids Climate Summit materials, including the Summit t-shirt.
