Gifted: A Rose by Any Other Name

CGCC Parenting Gifted Seminar
meeting space is hosted by
A.N Prizker School
2009 W. Schiller Street,
Chicago, IL 60622

Registration Required!

CGCC welcomes Andy Mahoney (LCPC, MS) and Mark Talaga (LPC, MA), two professional counselors with specific knowledge and expertise surrounding children who are considered gifted and/or talented. In this talk, they will be offering a working definition of the word “Gifted” and how it relates to other relevant populations that form the larger backdrop of giftedness (accelerated, developmentally delayed, neuro-atypical, twice exceptional, etc.)  How do professionals, parents, and educators make sense of the label and what, if anything, should they be doing with it? This opportunity is built specifically for those in the gifted community who have challenging or unanswered questions about their child and what it means for them to have the label of gifted.

The gifted community is growing fast and the information out there can sometimes be confusing or contradictory. Utilize the 30 years of experience from Andy, one of the pioneers of counseling the gifted; or ask Mark, as specialist in the field, specific questions on what behavior is “normal”. Here you can ask either presenter what your child might need to activate their potential. Take advantage of this unique opportunity to have both Andy and Mark help navigate the tough questions surrounding giftedness. Come ready to learn and ready to engage two experts in the field of counseling the gifted.

We hope you can join us!

Andy Mahoney is the founder of the Center for Identity Potential and Identity Potential, Inc. He is a recognized expert and pioneer in the field of counseling the gifted and talented. His expertise spans nearly 30 years as a counselor, family therapist, and trainer of mental health professionals. Additionally, Andy has focused his emphasis on identity development to create The Fit, a software program the center utilizes in the context of counseling, career development, personal growth and business development.

Mark Talaga is a specially trained counselor who works primarily with gifted children, adolescents and young adults by helping them activate their potential. He has led talks on “What Makes Gifted Boys Tick?” as well as how “Video Games and Giftedness” are related.  As a former professional in the video game industry, Mark offers a unique connection with many gifted kids and speaks their language. His work with each child extends to the family as well as the school as he helps to forge successful relationships with the intention of helping all to better understand and support the gifted child.

A special thank you to the A.N. Pritzker School for allowing us to use their auditorium for this presentation.

The school is at the SW corner of Damen and Schiller, just a block and a half south of the Damen Blue Line stop. Street parking is available in the neighborhood and in the lot behind the school on Evergreen, one block south of the school. (Evergreen is one way East.)  Enter the school on the Schiller side via the main doors.  Push the "door bell" to be buzzed in or call the number posted above the door and someone will let you in.  The auditorium is on the 1st floor of the school, down the hall from the entrance.
